Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes: Help Your Children ...

How do you define family??
This is the seemingly simple question that I ask college students in my adulthood and aging course when we begin to talk about family. ?As they offer definitions, I jot down phrases on the board in the front of the room.? As we move along, students? definitions become broader and more inclusive.?

In 2013, the reality is that there is not one model of "family."? In fact, there are not even two or three models of family to which we can turn in order to neatly and easily complete our list.? Children may be biological or adopted or fostered; raised by parents or grandparents; have no siblings or half siblings or step-siblings; have heterosexual or homosexual parents; have two parents who have remained married or up to four parents who represent blended families.

In fact, approximately 40% of children have divorced parents.? Two and a half million children experience the death of a parent before the age of 18.? About 1.8 million children in the U.S. are adopted.? The past four decades brought changing divorce and marriage rates, more women in the workforce, a longer life expectancy, more reproductive technologies, delayed marriage and childrearing, more alternative family patterns.? Frankly, there is no norm!

With great diversity in families comes a sense of liberation for some and great challenges for others.? And sometimes, both liberation and challenge for the same people.? As adults, we largely create the families that our children will experience.? Granted, circumstances beyond our control can influence the nature and structure of our families, but, as parents, we create a climate and context for their childhoods.
What are some of the ways that we can increase our children?s likelihood of positive outcomes because of (or in spite of) our family circumstances?

  • Embrace your family.? A family is what you make it.? No matter who the mom(s), dad(s), sons, daughters, grandparents, or other loved ones, it is important for children to identify with a family unit that is full of love and acceptance.? My son and I call ourselves a "team."? I am no doubt the mom and he is the child, but we recognize that the two of us have an important family identity and we often have to work to make things happen together.? We embrace that we are "good team."? For an 8year old, the team concept works well.
?
  • Celebrate uniqueness.? Adoptive families often celebrate birthdays as well as "adoption day" or "coming-home day."? Instead of hiding from what may be different from the majority, find ways to celebrate it.? Researchers have demonstrated that openness from as early an age or time as possible is a good thing?as long as it is done in a developmentally appropriate way.? If you avoid talking about certain things, kids will often assume that means it is bad.? So, talk about it?and celebrate it.
?
  • Communicate and support your child?s emotions.? I believe that communication is one of the best preventive medications we have.? Effective communication is a key to good relationships?it is true in marriages as well as in parent-child relationships.? Talk to your child and validate his or her emotions.? For instance, do talk about adoption.? I always say that adopted children are "double loved" because they have birth parents who loved them so much that they wanted to find them a special home and they have adoptive parents who waited a long time to have that special child that they could love. ?Don?t be afraid to start the conversation or ask your child if they have any questions about their family or background.?
?
  • Be proactive with teachers about issues that are sensitive for your child.? Particularly if your child is in grade school, there may be family issues that you should share with your child?s teacher?divorce, marriage, new home, death in the family.? That way, the teacher can be educated about the subject and know how to handle it should it come up at school.? Depending on the school, the peers, the age, and how your family has dealt with various issues, it can be helpful to be proactive on your child?s behalf. ?I can still remember first grade in the 1970s when we were making Father?s Day gifts and my teacher had no idea whatsoever to do when I said I didn?t have a dad to make it for.? Had she known, much little girl confusion could have been avoided!
  • Surround children with similar others.? Children as young as two and three years old tend to choose as friends those who are similar to them.? We tend to get into intimate relationships with similar others.? In love, opposites may attract, but research shows they are likely to eventually repel.? If your family situation is unique, try to find other families like yours so that your child does not feel like they are "the only one."? Young children want (and some even need) to fit in.? Help your child find her niche.? That doesn?t mean you only surround your child with "like" others.? Certainly not.? But expose your family to others that allow children to take comfort in seeing others like them.? Are you a grandmother raising your grandchild alone?? Find another grandparent-guardian with whom both you and your child can identify.
In 2013, we are na?ve to think that families are made up of a mom, dad, and two children.? They can be, for sure.? But the majority of families are not constructed that way.? Embrace your family, celebrate your children, communicate together, keep a conversation going with your child?s teacher, and find others in similar situations as you and your children.? These can go a long way in helping children understand that family is whatever you make it.

What is your family structure?? Have you faced any difficulties with a less traditional family arrangement?? How did you (or how do you) handle them?? Do you have special family traditions that celebrate your family?s identity?

10 years in mobile gaming ? Nokia Conversations : the official Nokia ...

dragon

Industry veteran Herocraft has just celebrated its tenth anniversary of creating games for mobile phones. But what made them get started and what have they learned about mobile gaming in the last decade? We asked company spokesperson Alexey Sazonov to tell us all.

alexey? In 2002 the concept of mobile gaming was very new, and quite revolutionary. But when the founders looked around, they couldn?t see enormous potential for growth in traditional gaming. For mobiles, on the other hand ? well, we?d already seen the rise of PDA gaming and the success of sites like PocketGear. It seemed very likely to us that we?d see a similar explosion in mobile.

?And we?ve been developing for Nokia since day one, with tens of millions of downloads!?

So, after ten years in the industry, you must have a very good idea of what makes a good game?

?Hah. I wish someone would tell us!

?We try not to follow any formulas, because that would stifle innovation. Instead, we experiment a lot.

?I?d have to say that there are two secret ingredients: passion and good ideas.?

majesty1a

Herocraft is quite unusual in the breadth of its offering. Instead of specialising in one operating system, the company supports a wide cross-section of platforms, and in more than a dozen different languages.

?We?re dedicated to being cross-platform ? we?ll support any device so long as it makes money for us.

?In fact, one part of our business is to take games developed for other platforms and migrate them to new ones. An example of that is Contre Jour, which we?ve just released for Symbian.

?When it comes to choosing platforms, well, we don?t want to miss out on any big new success stories.?

majesty2a

What are the trends Alexey is seeing in mobile gaming?

?Well, the market is mature now, so it?s becoming necessary to find your niche and become expert in it. Herocraft always seeks to have a broad portfolio of different titles in its catalogue. But over time, we?ve come to specialise in strategy titles. Partly because they?re the sort of game we like to play ourselves. Our biggest title, Majesty, fits into that genre.?

Thank you, Alexey for your time, and here?s to ten more years in the business!

NB: HeroCraft is currently having a 10th-anniversary sale on some of its most successful titles for Symbian and Series 40 devices.

CyanogenMod 10.1 Milestone 1 hits Nexus and Samsung devices

CyanogenMod 101 Milestone 1 hits Nexus and Samsung devices

Despite all the nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1, there hasn't been much of anything definitive to hang our hats on. There's at last some sense of reliability now that Milestone 1 versions have hit the servers. Most Nexus devices, as well as swaths of Samsung's Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab 2 ranges, can get the unofficial Android 4.2 build for themselves. The M1 code is deemed "mostly stable" and good enough for daily use, although that's relative -- it's not yet to the level of a fully stable build, let alone factory firmware. If you only needed fewer risks than before, though, the downloads and details await at the source links.

[Thanks, Rashid]

The Weekend That Was | A Dose of Happy

Aaaaaaaaand yet another weekend down in January!

OMG, is it me or is this month just passing us by at warp speed?!?

This weekend we celebrated our clan reunion.

Since my family played host, we held it at my grandparents? rest home in Bulacan.

I just love it here! ?It holds so many wonderful memories of my childhood :) .

Slide1

I especially love the house?s facade, not only for its retro ?70s design (isn?t the wooden grill carving surrounding the front door so vintagey cool? :) ), but also for how it reminds me of many an afternoon spent on Lolo and Lola?s rocking chairs, seeing how high they could go. :)

Slide2

The inside of the house is now a treasure trove of antiques and other items that belonged to both my grandparents. ?It?s actually been converted into a museum, but I think it still looks much like how it used to when it was their home?only a bit nicer and more organized. ?Hahaha!

Slide3

I don?t know if you can tell, but aside from some artwork, this wall also has a lot of pictures of my family throughout the years.

Those were the days?*sigh*

That painting in the middle is by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo. ?I?ve heard that he painted this portrait of my grandmother and my aunts for 500 pesos! ?Can you believe it?

Slide4

One of my most favorite spots in this house is the dining area (I?ve got my eye on that chandelier. ?Hahaha! :P ). ?I have such fond recollections of drinking sweetened?buko juice, with the hugest chunks of coconut meat to go with it. ?It was Lola?s idea of?merienda when I was little.

Those were definitely good times :) .

I wish I had taken more pictures to show you guys but unfortunately, these were the only ones I was able to take :( . ?The reunion was in full swing, and I had just slipped out for a while to use the bathroom when I took these photographs.

Nevertheless, these photos took me on a wonderful 5-minute trip down memory lane.

It was a great way to wrap up the weekend :) .

Oil down after dour Europe jobless report

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell below $93 Wednesday after unemployment in the countries that use the euro rose to its highest level since the single currency was founded.

Benchmark oil for February delivery was down 19 cents to $92.96 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 4 cents to finish at $93.15 a barrel in New York.

Unemployment in the 17 euro countries rose to 11.8 percent in November from 11.7 percent in October, a reflection of a weak economy and the highest jobless rate since the euro was founded in 1999. Germany, the region's biggest economy, said industrial orders fell more than expected in November due to weaker foreign demand. German exports also fell.

"The outlook for global commodities is likely to remain uncertain in the next twelve months with low growth hampering demand especially in Europe," Michael Hewson of CMC Markets said in an email commentary.

Oil traders will be monitoring fresh information this week on U.S. supplies of crude and refined products.

Data for the week ended Jan. 4 is expected to show a rise of 1.5 million barrels for crude oil and an increase of 2.6 million barrels in gasoline stocks, according to a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos. The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration releases its crude inventories report later Wednesday.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 12 cents to $111.82 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 2.3 cents to $2.772 a gallon.

? Heating oil fell 0.3 cents to $3.056 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 2.6 cents to $3.192 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Scientists discover how deadly skin cancer spreads into other parts ...

The study's lead author is Paul B. Fisher, M.Ph., Ph.D. Credit: VCU Massey Cancer Center

After recently announcing success in eliminating melanoma metastasis in laboratory experiments, scientists at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center have made another important discovery in understanding the process by which the gene mda-9/syntenin contributes to metastasis in melanoma (the spread of skin cancer) and possibly a variety of other cancers.

Published in the journal Cancer Research, the study demonstrated that mda-9/syntenin is a key regulator of angiogenesis, the process responsible for the formation of new blood vessels in tumors. Mda-9/syntenin was originally cloned in the laboratory of the study's lead author Paul B. Fisher, M.Ph., Ph.D., Thelma Newmeyer Corman Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and program co-leader of Cancer Molecular Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center, chairman of VCU's Department of Human and Molecular Genetics and director of the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine.

"Our research brings us one step closer to understanding precisely how metastatic melanoma, a highly aggressive and therapy-resistant cancer, spreads throughout the body," says Fisher. "Additionally, analysis of the human genome has indicated that mda-9/syntenin is elevated in the majority of cancers, which means novel drugs that target this gene could potentially be applicable to a broad spectrum of other deadly cancers."

Fisher's team discovered that mda-9/syntenin regulates the expression of several proteins responsible for promoting angiogenesis, including insulin growth factor binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2) and interleukin-8 (IL-8). The study is the first to provide proof of the pro-angiogenic functions of IGFBP-2 in human melanoma.

In in vivo and in vitro experiments, the scientists confirmed that mda-9/syntenin binds with the extracellular matrix (ECM) to start a series of biological processes that eventually cause endothelial cells to secrete IGFBP-2. The ECM is the substance that cells secrete and in which they are embedded. Endothelial cells are the cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels throughout the entire circulatory system. The secretion of IGFBP-2, in turn, caused the endothelial cells to produce and secrete vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), a protein that mediates the development of and formation of new blood vessels.

The researchers also noted that IGFBP-2 could potentially serve as a novel biomarker to monitor for disease progression in melanoma patients.

"This is a major breakthrough in understanding angiogenesis and its impact in melanoma metastasis," says Fisher. "We are now focusing on developing novel small molecules that specifically target mda-9/syntenin and IGFBP-2, which could be used as drugs to treat melanoma and potentially many other cancers."

Giant Gas Geysers Erupting from Milky Way Galaxy

Colossal magnetized fountains of gamma-ray-emitting gas are spewing from the center of our Milky Way galaxy, researchers say.

The amount of magnetic energy contained in these geyser-like outflows "corresponds to the energy liberated by about a million supernova explosions ? that is a lot!" study lead author Ettore Carretti, an astrophysicist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia, told SPACE.com.

These outflows could help solve mysteries concerning the magnetic field of the Milky Way galaxy, Carretti added.

Past research detected regions, later called "Fermi bubbles," that emitted gamma rays far above and below the galactic center. Gamma rays are the most energetic form of light.

To learn more about these Fermi bubbles, the researchersanalyzed the parts of the sky including these regions using the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia as part of the S-band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS). They detected giant outflows of gamma-ray-emitting gas, two cone-shaped lobes that combined are about 50,000 light-years long.

"That is about half the size of the entire Milky Way," Carretti said. Seen from Earth, the outflows stretch about two-thirds across the sky from horizon to horizon.

Each of these lobes is about 13,000 light-years wide, and made of gas traveling about 2.2 million mph (3.6 million kph). [Amazing Milky Way Photos]

"Beside the galactic disc, these are the largest structures ever discovered in our galaxy," Carretti said.

These outflows are about 100 million years old, and apparently spew mostly from supernovas within the compact 650-light-year-wide area surrounding the supermassive black hole at the core of the Milky Way. Supernovas are the most powerful exploding stars in the universe, bright enough to momentarily outshine their entire galaxies.

"The compact region around the Milky Way's center harbors the most active star formation activity of our galaxy, and a number of supernova episodes occur there," Carretti said.

These outflows each hold a vast amount of magnetic energy, which helps explain why they glow with gamma rays.

"The gas expelled by supernova explosions is magnetized," Carretti said. "Moreover, all of the area of the galactic center possesses a strong magnetic field and the outflows, made of charged particles, can trap the magnetic field they are immersed in.

"These findings tell us there is transport of a massive amount of energy and strong magnetic fields from ?the galactic center to the outskirts of the galaxy," Carretti said. "It is an interaction we did not know about, and can transform our view of the galactic halo."

The galactic halo "was supposed to be a quiet place," Carretti said. "We now know it is continuously fueled with a massive amount of energy."

These cone-shaped outflows have denser ridges corkscrewing around their surfaces much like strings of lights wrapped around Christmas trees. These ridges are about 13,000 to 16,000 light-years long and 1,000 light-years wide.

"They are made of relativistic charged particles ? high-energy particles that move nearly at the speed of light," Carretti said.

One of these ridges, dubbed the Galactic Center spur, apparently stems from a super-stellar cluster orbiting the galaxy's center. Super-stellar clusters contain a very large number of young, massive stars.

These ridges take on a corkscrew form because matter spewing out from the spinning center of the galaxy moves in spirals. This is because of conservation of angular momentum, the same property that causes ice skaters to spin faster if they draw their arms in.

The other two ridges the researchers see are not connected to super-stellar clusters. The researchers suggest the clusters they originated from may no longer be active, thus shedding light on the history of star activity in the galactic core.

These outflows might help explain mysteries surrounding the galaxy's magnetic field.

"How the galactic magnetic field is generated and sustained is still a mystery, and our finding can be crucial to solve it," Carretti said. The outflows carry magnetic material from the galactic center to the galactic halo, helping to explain why a magnetic field pervades the galaxy, he said.

As monstrous as these outflows are, they are no danger to us, Carretti said. "They are not coming in our direction, but go up and down from the galactic plane. We are 30,000 light-years away from the galactic centre, in the plane," he explained in a statement.

In the future, the researchers would like to identify the roots of the outflows and their ridges and investigate any connections between the magnetic fields of the outflows and the galaxy's.

The scientists detailed their findings in tomorrow's (Jan. 3) issue of the journal Nature.

South Sudan willing to withdraw army from Sudan border: president

JUBA (Reuters) - South Sudan is willing to withdraw its army from the disputed border with Sudan, President Salva Kiir said, signaling a possible compromise at a summit with his Sudanese counterpart.

Kiir and Sudan's Omar Hassan al-Bashir agreed in September to withdraw troops from the disputed border as a precondition to resume oil exports from landlocked South Sudan through Sudan. Oil revenues are vital to both economies.

But both countries still have troops 10 km (6 miles) from each other's border, and both accuse each other of supporting rebels on the other's territory.

Kiir and Bashir are scheduled to meet this month at a summit brokered by the African Union to discuss how set up the border zone which will be monitored by soldiers from both sides and U.N. peacekeepers.

"To be able to establish the border monitoring mission, we are temporarily withdrawing our forces from the immediate border areas," Kiir said in a speech on New Year's Eve.

"This will allow for a demilitarized border zone to be operational," he said, without giving a date for the pullout.

South Sudan's Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told Reuters the withdrawal would have to be coordinated between the two countries. He did not elaborate.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan under a 2005 peace deal which ended decades of civil war. But both countries have yet to demarcate the border, which straddles oil production facilities.

The two rivals are also at odds over Abyei, an area between Sudan and South Sudan prized for its fertile grazing land.
