Airline passengers may get a break on electronics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government is taking a tentative step toward making it easier for airlines to allow passengers to use personal electronic devices such as tablets, e-readers and music players during takeoffs and landings.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Monday it is "exploring ways to bring together all of the key stakeholders involved" ? including airlines, aircraft manufacturers, consumer electronics makers, and flight attendant unions ? to discuss whether there are practical ways to test devices to see if they are safe for passengers to use during critical phases of flight.

Technically, FAA rules already permit any airline to test specific makes and models to determine if they generate enough power that they could interfere with sensitive cockpit radios, navigation instruments and other critical equipment. But few airlines have done that kind of extensive testing because there are so many devices, and testing them all ? or even many ? isn't practical.

Instead, the fallback position has been to comply with FAA rules requiring passengers to turn off all electronic devices while the aircraft's altitude is below 10,000 feet.

Even if a device were tested and approved for use today, later iterations of the same machine might be different enough that they'd have to be tested again. Today's Apple iPad, for example, isn't the same as the original iPad developed three years ago.

"Can any device do this? The answer is no. All devices are not created equal. Some have more power than others," said Kevin Hiatt, chief operating officer of the industry-supported Flight Safety Foundation of Alexandria, Va.

Another concern is the "additive effects" of a planeload of 200 people using devices at once versus one passenger using a device, said Kenny Kirchoff, senior research and development engineer at the Boeing Co.

Recently manufactured planes have more shielding built into their wiring and other electronic equipment to prevent most electromagnetic interference, but planes that pre-date the early 1990s don't have nearly as much shielding, he said.

While acknowledging "this is an area of consumer interest," the FAA said in a statement that "no changes will be made until we are certain they will not impact safety and security."

Steve Lott, a spokesman for Airlines for America, a trade association for major carriers, said airlines would "work cooperatively with the FAA on any opportunities to evaluate personal electronic devices to ensure customers can use these products safely during flight."

One device that won't be included in the discussions: Cell phones, including smartphones. Another government agency ? the Federal Communications Commission ? already prohibits their use aloft for reasons unrelated to safety concerns. Because planes travel at hundreds of miles per hour, cellphones on airliners could skip so rapidly from cell tower to cell tower that they might interfere with the service of phone users on the ground, aviation experts said.

Consumer demand to use personal electronics at all times on board planes has been increasing, especially on flights with long delays waiting for takeoff.

A study released in January by Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University in Chicago found that tablet use on commercial flights is growing rapidly. An estimated one in twelve airline passengers are using a tablet, the study said.

"We estimate that 'technology-available time' is reduced by about 30 percent on short flights ? or more on really short flights ? due to prohibitions on use the devices at takeoff and landing," Joseph Schwieterman, director of the institute, said.

At the same time, American Airlines has received FAA permission for some of their pilots to use iPads in cockpits. Such "electronic flight bags" are an alternative to hauling around pounds of paper operating manuals and navigation charts.

"The average passenger starts to think, 'Wait a minute. If they're using them in the cockpit, why can't I use them in the cabin?' " Hiatt, a former airline pilot, said.

There have also been several high-profile scraps between passengers and cabin crews over use of the devices. Actor Alec Baldwin was booted off an American Airlines flight in Los Angeles in December for refusing to quit playing a word game on his cell phone after a flight attendant ordered him to shut down the device.

AmeriNZ Blog: Business ethics

It?s no secret that I don?t trust big corporations in general, even if in the specific I think some are okay. The problem is that the ones that are bad are so very bad that they taint all big business. Take a look at my posts tagged ?Corporate Greed? for what most annoys me.

The modern business paradigm rewards greed, and that, in turn, encourages behaviours that are unethical, immoral and even illegal?as long as profit is maximised and you don?t get caught, anything goes. There are, of course, businesses big and small that take a different approach, trying to act with integrity and solid ethics. Some even do a pretty good job of meeting such positive goals.

How can the rest of us tell? Third parties can help.

There are many different rankings of businesses based on various criteria, and I was reminded of that yesterday when I saw a story saying that the world?s ?most ethical businesses? had been ?revealed?. It turns out it?s from a New York City-based outfit called ?Ethisphere? which, quite frankly, I?d never heard of (even though they?ve produced rankings dating back to 2007).

I never take assertions like a ranking of the ?world?s best? anything without checking out the details. Not only are the rankings legit, to my mind they make excellent benchmarks for investors and would-be employees.

They ranked 145 companies throughout the world with 43 based outside the US (there were only two Australasian companies, both Australian banks: Westpac and National Australia Bank, which owns the Bank of New Zealand; ANZ dropped off the rankings this year). Companies are ranked using a series of multiple choice questions built on five main categories, which are weighted (the questionnaire is available online).

Two of the categories caught my eye: ?Corporate Citizenship and Responsibility? (25% of the score) and ?Culture of Ethics? (20% of the score). While all of the criteria are related to good, transparent and sustainable business practices, these two categories highlighted what to me is the very opposite of what I so often criticise in businesses.

But there are other considerations that people often make. For example, the Human Rights Campaign, the largest GLBT political organisation in the US, produces a ?Corporate Equality Index? every Northern Hemisphere autumn. In their current Index, they introduced more stringent criteria regarding transgender health benefits, and yet 189 companies still achieved a perfect 100% score, including ten of the top 20 Fortune 500 corporations. When the Index began ten years ago, most companies were listed in the middle rankings, but now the majority of companies have a score above 80%.

So, what use are such rankings? They provide a useful tool for people looking for companies that aren?t evil, whether to invest in or to work for or to patronise. For example, Exxon-Mobil has a negative 25 ranking on the HRC index, so I won?t buy petrol (or anything else) at Mobil stations in New Zealand so that none of the money I spend in this country makes it back into the USA and the greedy mitts of Exxon-Mobil.

Ultimately, knowledge really is power, and the more information we have about big business (or governments?), the better. These rankings show that behaving ethically is good for business. It?s up to all of us to ensure they don?t forget that.

You know you?re in the 21st century when you start using email communication during an argument with your partner!

I have taken to using this method for a variety of reasons, not only does it mean that I can get my point across in a calm and controlled way without screeching and stopping Dad2BabyInsomniac from listening but it also means that he has a little relationship manual to refer to when he forgets things (which he does quite regularly!)

Maybe I should just learn to communicate in a calm and controlled way without screeching but why would I bother doing that when I can just email instead?!

Welcome to the Love Relationships showcase!

and it wasn?t to be friends now was it? This question has been kicking around for decades quite possibly for centuries. Can men and women ever be friends in the true platonic sense of the word? No sex allowed. Now I?m not that well versed on Greek philosophers. If truth be told I am not well read at all but I have it on good authority that many were homosexual. So lets assume that Plato (not Pluto ? Mickey?s best friend as I originally read it) was gay?.

Pro-Assad rallies as revolt enters second year

Huge rallies backing Syria's regime took place in the face of growing international ire at the violent suppression of a year-long revolt, with Arab Gulf states deciding to shut their embassies in Damascus.

International peace envoy Kofi Annan, meanwhile, demanded answers from President Bashar al-Assad's regime before the UN Security Council re-enters the fray in a conflict that monitors say has cost more than 9,100 lives as it enters its second year.

State television showed tens of thousands of people waving Syrian flags and Assad's portrait in squares in Damascus, the northern city of Aleppo, Latakia on the Mediterranean coast, Suweida to the south and Hasaka in the northeast on Thursday.

The cities have been relatively unscathed by the deadly crackdown on dissent.

The authorities, which have blamed the bloodshed on foreign-backed "terrorist gangs," announced a "global march for Syria" to counter anti-regime demonstrations being organised this week by the opposition across the world.

Later the announcement came that all six Arab Gulf states will close their embassies in Syria in protest at the year-long crackdown in the country.

Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait took the step, said Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) head Abdullatif al-Zayani early Friday, citing the regime's "massacring its people, choosing the military option and rejecting all initiatives aimed at finding a solution to the crisis."

European Union foreign ministers will mull similar action next week, senior EU sources in Brussels confirmed to AFP.

A Brussels meeting next Thursday and Friday will focus on "possible closures" of the 27 national EU embassies in Syria.

An EU official said that Europe is considering a coordinated withdrawal of all diplomatic contacts with Damascus ahead of the new push at the United Nations for action against Assad's regime.

In a breakdown of the 9,113 deaths in the past 12 months, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the toll comprised 6,645 civilians, 1,997 members of the security forces and 471 rebels.

In Aleppo and on the outskirts of Damascus, security forces broke up scattered anti-regime protests, according to the Local Coordination Committees, which organise demonstrations.

"Bashar, get out," women chanted at a rally in the Jubar district of eastern Damascus, in a video posted by activists on the Internet.

The Observatory, meanwhile, said 23 mutilated corpses were found near the protest city of Idlib in northwest Syria that was seized by regime forces this week.

The victims had been blindfolded and handcuffed before being shot and the bodies dumped outside Idlib, it said, in an apparent repeat of a "massacre" of dozens of women and children in the flashpoint city of Homs last weekend.

It also said at least 16 other people were killed in violence on Thursday: nine civilians and four rebel fighters in Idlib province, a soldier shot in the city of the same name and two army officers on the Homs-Qusayr road.

Human Rights Watch stepped in to demand an end to the violence and insist that China and Russia stop blocking UN efforts to take tough action.

"City after city, town after town, Syria's security forces are using their scorched earth methods while the Security Council's hands remain tied by Russia and China," HRW's Sarah Leah Whitson.

Since October, Moscow and Beijing have blocked two draft Security Council resolutions to condemn Damascus, saying they were unbalanced and aimed at regime change.

After a mission to Damascus, UN-Arab League mediator Annan has urged Assad to speed up efforts to end the bloodletting in Syria.

The former UN chief had received a response to "concrete proposals" he submitted to the Syrian president last weekend but had more "questions and is seeking answers".

Annan, who is to brief the Security Council on his mission by video conference from Geneva on Friday, "is still in contact with the Syrian authorities -- the dialogue continues," said his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi.

The UN said it would send experts on a Syrian government-led humanitarian mission, while UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the past year of "brutal repression" by Assad's regime.

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos stressed "it is increasingly vital that humanitarian organisations have unhindered access to identify urgent needs and provide emergency care and basic supplies. There is no time to waste."

In neighbouring Turkey, the foreign ministry said about 1,000 Syrian refugees, including a defecting general, had crossed into the country in the past 24 hours.

Turkey's Red Crescent chief, Ahmet Lutfi Akar, warned that up to 500,000 Syrians may cross into the country seeking refuge from the bloodshed.

Also in Turkey, hundreds of activists in a "Freedom Convoy" who tried to enter Syria were stopped by Turkish police near the border. The aid they were carrying would instead be offered to Syrian refugees inside Turkey.

In Lebanon, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah urged all parties to the conflict in Syria, a close ally of the movement also backed by Iran, to lay down their weapons.

Avoiding travel insurance rip-offs | InsuranceQuotes.com

Kathryn Hawkins

If you?re planning a trip, any number of factors can foil your plans, including weather problems, illness and flight cancellations, just to name a few. Certainly, buying a travel insurance policy can help protect your investment in an upcoming voyage. But is travel insurance always necessary? And how can you judge whether a particular policy is going to give you the coverage you really need?

Consider these strategies for determining whether a travel insurance policy is a rip-off or a valuable investment.

1. Decide whether the costs of the trip are significant enough to warrant purchasing insurance.

?A traveler should ask himself, ?How much will the trip cost in terms of dollars, and how much am I willing to risk if I can?t go on that trip??? says Vikki Corliss, a spokeswoman for travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip.com. ?For some, a $500 airline ticket is more than they want to risk; for others, it may be a $5,000 week at Disney World with the family.?

travel_insuranceGauge your own tolerance for risk, and calculate how much a travel insurance policy will cost you, as well as the likelihood that you?ll need to back out of the trip. For instance, are you taking a cruise to a hurricane-prone destination? If it?s an expensive journey and there?s any likelihood that you may need to cancel, travel insurance probably is a worthwhile investment.

2. Make sure you?re not inadvertently buying travel insurance you don?t want or need.

Often, travel booking sites include travel insurance policies within their package deals. In the past, consumers weren?t always aware they were buying such policies. The travel booking site Travelocity.com was forced by the Minnesota Department of Commerce to give refunds to more than 80,000 customers who?d unknowingly purchased travel insurance when the insurance policies were listed as ?opt out? instead of ?opt in? add-ons.

However, such practices no longer are legal. The U.S. Department of Transportation?s new passenger protection rules prohibit all types of ?opt out? provisions in sales contracts. Even so, check your receipts carefully to ensure you haven?t inadvertently purchased travel insurance or another add-on you don?t want or need. Companies that still are selling ?opt out? policies could be subject to federal fines and other penalties.

3. Purchase a travel insurance policy through a third-party agency.

If you?ve determined that you do need travel insurance for an upcoming trip, it?s usually wise to pick a third-party insurer rather than going with a policy offered as part of a package through your airline, cruise line or other travel service provider. ?You will receive benefits through a third party that aren?t necessarily available through your airline or cruise line,? Corliss says.

Under a cruise line?s protection plan, for instance, you may receive credit only toward a future trip if you need to cancel a voyage, rather than the full refund that an independent travel insurance company typically offers. Bundled protection plans often exclude costs for related travel arrangements (such as airfare to your cruise destination). And if the cruise line, airline or travel booking service goes into bankruptcy or financial default, you won?t be eligible for a refund.

?When you purchase through a third party, you know what you?re getting,? says Carol Mueller, vice president of travel insurance company Travel Guard.

4. Make sure that the terms fit your needs.

Before buying any travel insurance policy, it?s essential to look at the fine print to verify that all of the policy?s terms fit your requirements. For instance, Mueller suggests looking at the permitted reasons and time limits for cancellation of a trip; some policies have narrow criteria.

Pay attention to exclusions as well. For instance, if you are pregnant, you may need to buy a separate rider so that pregnancy-related health issues will be covered while traveling.

Also, take into account how long you?ll be traveling. Short-term insurance covers trips up to 90 days; long-term covers up to one year; and expatriate insurance covers you if you plan to live internationally for more than a year.

Additionally, make sure you?re not paying extra for a policy that offers coverage you?re already receiving through another source. Many credit cards provide automatic coverage for rental cars, lost or damaged baggage, flight accident or death, and emergency travel assistance ? as long as you used your credit card to pay for the entire trip. Check with your credit card issuer to find out what?s covered.

5. Conduct independent research.

Websites such as InsureMyTrip.com and Squaremouth.com can help you compare hundreds of travel insurance products; InsureMyTrip.com also provides free phone consultation from insurance professionals. The sites offer display customer reviews for the policies that they sell.

When considering travel insurance, ?do a self-analysis first to see if you need it,? Corliss says. If you think that you do, ?find someone who can help you understand what products are available,? whether through a website, travel agent or insurance agent.

?Most people don?t know what questions to ask. It?s a learning curve,? Corliss says.

Jermaine Jones' Arrest History Said To Include Violence

'American Idol' contestant will reportedly be kicked off the show on Wednesday for lying to producers about his criminal past.
By Gil Kaufman

Just hours after news broke that frog-voiced "gentle giant" Jermaine Jones was scheduled to be booted from "American Idol" on Wednesday night (March 14) for allegedly lying to producers about his criminal past, TMZ posted a list of what it claimed were Jones' priors.

The towering mama's boy singer, who charmed judges enough to earn a reprieve after not making the top 12, was reportedly involved in a fight at a Howard Johnson Hotel in his native New Jersey on March 5, 2011. According to TMZ, he provided police with a fake name, Joel Jones, in that case. He was charged with public nuisance and obstruction of justice, as well as having outstanding warrants from an unspecified earlier incident.

He allegedly had another run-in with cops on November 27 of last year, during which he was a passenger in a car that was pulled over in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. He reportedly once again provided a phony name, telling police he was Kareem Watkins. At that time, he was charged with hindering apprehension and giving false information to avoid self-discovery and again arrested for having outstanding warrants.

TMZ reported that Jones had a total of four outstanding warrants: three for driving on a suspended license and one for disorderly conduct with an open container. "Idol" insiders reportedly said that when the "Idol" risk-assessment team asked Jones about any potential issues before he made it into the top 24, he claimed he hadn't so much as gotten into a fistfight since high school.

On top of allegedly not disclosing those police actions to "Idol" producers — a big no-no on a show that strives to be squeaky clean — TMZ also quoted unnamed "Idol" sources as saying that Jones was "very aggressive" with staff behind the scenes, once "terrorizing" a member of the crew by screaming at her because he didn't like his wardrobe.

A spokesperson for "Idol" has not returned MTV News' requests for comment. But in a tweet that has since been deleted, Jones, 25, appeared to confirm the news on Tuesday, writing, "Awww I will no longer b on the show." His official "Idol" Twitter account has also been deleted.

Introducing DNT+: Keep your personal information personal in 2012 ...

DNT+: valiantly protecting your personal information online!

Do Not Track Plus (DNT+) peels back the cover on invisibleonline tracking?and targeted advertising, stopping you from being followed online.? And yes, you?are?being followed:? online tracking is a very real thing, even though you can?t see it.? It?s time to stop sharing your private information with people you don?t know!

The benefits of using DNT+

  • Stop?advertisers?from knowing what you do online, including your site visits, shopping interests, hobbies, clicks, and geographic location
  • Load certain websites up to 4 times faster
  • Block 580 different tracking technologies from over 215 tracking companies (and that list is always growing)
  • Get the good parts of Facebook and social networking without the bad:? block tracking but still voluntarily share and post?(and DNT+ is the only available blocking tool that still lets consumers see and use social buttons)
  • See a total count of how many times you?ve blocked tracking since you started using DNT+
  • Browse in true privacy, far beyond what built-in??private browsing modes??offer
  • Easily see which companies and technologies are trying to track you on each site you visit

There must be a catch, right?? How could DNT+ be free?

No catch.? We have a freemium model, meaning that we offer a free base service (DNT+) and separate paid upgrades, such as our?DeleteMe service?that removes our customers? personal information from public websites.? We are also working on another software offering called?PrivacySuite?that?s currently in beta, but it will have premium upgradeable features like forwarded emails and phone numbers.? The business model is to make awesome products that people love, have lots & lots of free users (and DNT+ will?always?be free), and then if some of our users want to support us by buying some sort of premium upgrade down the line, we?re good.

We?re also completely dedicated to your privacy, so don?t collect or track anything when you get DNT+ (unlike *cough cough* those?other?companies with shady ties to marketing people) .? The only thing we can see is that a download took place by a certain IP address so we can figure out how many users we have.? There are no forms to fill out and no tracking of any kind.? In fact, the only connection we ever have to the software is when it asks our servers for updates on new trackers to block.? That?s it!

Why should you care about online tracking?

Online tracking is a lot like this scenario:? you?re browsing online like you always do, but there?s a guy you don?t know standing behind you, looking over your shoulder.? He?s watching everything you do and keeping notes, notes that he?ll use to build a profile of you:? the pictures you upload, the things you like on Facebook, the sites you visit most, the things you like to buy, where you live, and more.? He?s going to sell this profile of you, with all your browsing information, to?other?guys you don?t know.

You wouldn?t be okay with this guy peering over your shoulder in real life, so why should you put up with it on the internet?? Don?t!? Stop giving?advertisers, identity thieves, and spammers the advantage by blocking online tracking.? All this tracking & data collection creates a ?double you,? a virtual you that advertisers & trackers built and try to target ads to. ?But unfortunately, a lot of their data is inaccurate, out of date, or out of context, and the real you suffers because of the virtual you. Some of the real, demonstrated harms include:

Bet you didn?t know all the companies that were watching you behind the scenes, did you?

  • Lowered credit scores and credit limits
  • Denial of insurance coverage, or more expensive coverage
  • Lost job opportunities, whether you aren?t hired to begin with or you?re fired because of something online
  • Identity theft (one particularly harmful example happened in?2005, when identity thieves pretending to be small businesses were given access to?ChoicePoint?s?database of over 163,000 consumers? financial records)
  • Filter bubbles?(to sum up this concept, we all see different things based on our targeted advertising profiles, which means we?re losing a collective understanding of the news and the world, things that are key to the democratic process)
  • Censorship of speech and association due to fear that what we do online will come back to haunt us
  • Erosion of the 4th Amendment right to privacy, particularly society?s collective understanding of when an expectation of privacy is ?reasonable?

You?ll be shocked to see how many different?companies?are monitoring you on a single website.? Check out our ?Top in Tracking? below for a preview of what you?ll come across.? And because loading all of these tracking companies? data takes up your computer?s resources and your time, blocking them with DNT+ lets you load certain websites?up to four times faster!

More about how DNT+ works

Although it is a powerful privacy tool, DNT+ is simple, user-friendly, and free.? Its icon sits in the corner of your browser and displays a number on each site you visit, which represents how many companies are attempting to gather information about you.

By expanding the DNT+ window, you can see more details on the specific companies and technologies attempting to track you, as well as an all-time count of blocked tracking attempts.

Alysia Flynn, Former Cop, Had Sex With Florida Teen Nearly 100 Times: Report

A mother and former cop had sex with at least one underage Florida boy dozens of times, threw wild parties for high school students and thought she was pregnant with a teen's child, a shocking sheriff's office report released on Monday alleges.

Alysia Flynn, 32, faces nearly 100 charges of having sex with the teen over the course of a year, according to a report obtained by WFTV.

The sheriff's office report states that Flynn, a friend of the 15-year-old boy's family, also thought she was pregnant at some point during their fling. Coaches and school staff at Viera High School, as well as the boy's parents, allegedly knew about the relationship for up to a year before it was reported to police.

Flynn was arrested on Thursday.

"It appears we?ve got a woman in her 30s actively looking for high school boys," Brevard County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Tod Goodyear told Florida Today. "From what we've uncovered so far from interviews, we're pretty confident there are other victims."

Cops suspect that Flynn was also hosting booze-fueled benders for teens at her home for teens from Viera High School and its football team.

WFTV reported that the teen's parents handed his cell phone over to investigators, and that Flynn was found to have naked pictures of the boy on her phone.

She's been charged with 53 counts of unlawful sexual activity with minors, 42 counts of lewd and lascivious battery, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She may face more charges related to the pictures on her cell phone, cops said.

Pleasant Hill police union says violent crime on the rise

PLEASANT HILL -- Last month, a fatal drive-by shooting and a botched armed robbery that left a man critically wounded rocked Pleasant Hill, where murder is uncommon and gunfire rarely disturbs the suburban quiet.

While the police union points to statistics for January and February as evidence of an alarming rise in violent crime, the chief says the numbers are fairly consistent with previous years.

Robberies spiked in the first two months of this year, up from one incident in 2011 to 10 in 2012. Residential and commercial burglaries also were up in January from the same month in 2011, from 13 to 23, but remained relatively flat for February, records show. And last month, a group of residents from Marlee Road told the council about a rash of car thefts and break-ins in their neighborhood. By comparison, Martinez -- a city of similar size -- had no murders and 15 robberies through the end of February.

"We're starting out this year with violent crimes, officers being injured and assaulted, and we're asking for help plain and simple," said union president Officer Todt Clark, who acknowledged the numbers are a snapshot and may not be indicative of a trend this year.

"We hope the administration of this agency and city leaders would join us and ask residents and people who work here and pass through town, if you see something suspicious, if it doesn't seem right, give us a call."

Chief Pete Dunbar said he appreciates the union's

effort to raise public awareness about crime prevention and the need to report sketchy activity. But he points out that there were eight robberies during the first two months of 2010 and 11 during the same period in 2009. Though deeply troubling, neither the murder nor the shooting behind Strandwood Elementary School was random, he added.

"My message is also, this is still a very safe city despite these crimes because it's consistent with the numbers in previous years, except for last year when it was down," Dunbar said.

Clark said the union isn't lobbying for more police officers -- in fact, the department is hiring two, bringing the roster up to 44. He also said officers aren't casting blame on anyone, but simply are asking city leaders to acknowledge the crime burst and work with them to inform the community.

Still, there's the timing of the union's public education push. Dunbar was out of town Wednesday when the union blasted a news release with the crime statistics to Bay Area media outlets. Furthermore, Pleasant Hill and the 54-member Police Officers' Association just resumed contract negotiations in February. Last fall, after months of talks and a rancorous meeting at City Hall, the council imposed a contract on police officers and dispatchers that cut their retirement and medical benefits.

Clark said the contract talks did not play a role in the union's decision to go public now.

"We're currently in the middle of healthy negotiations with the city right now; that's a totally separate issue," he said.

Mayor John Hanecak said he doesn't have a problem with the union sending out a news release, but he suggested that the city's monthly newsletter may be a better way to communicate with residents.

He urges homeowners, like the folks from Marlee Road, to work with police to organize neighborhood watch groups. Hanecak also encourages people to report suspicious people or vehicles to police.

"I just want to avoid these tragedies for the families and anyone else involved in the future," he said.

Pet dogs With Melanoma Helping to discover a Cure. | goflavor37.com

Within her quest in order to save Emmy, Streeter come across a review underway at Colorado Point out University?s Dog Cancer Centre in Fortification Collins, about 100 mls from her home within Franktown, Colo. It seemed to be testing a gene therapy that could be injected straight into osteosarcoma growths. The gene delivers a molecule made to induce this cancer tissues to self-destruct. Veterinarians there wanted to see precisely how well canines reacted for the treatment, as portion of an effort to find out whether it would also become investigated for use in children.

Streeter is a cancer survivor herself-in 2004, she undergo a dual mastectomy along with chemotherapy to help remedy breast cancer-and did not hesitate in order to sign Emmy up. After the injection, CSU vets afforded Emmy the normal treatment, too: amputation of her lower-leg plus six to eight rounds associated with chemo. They?re right now evaluating the fact that injection influenced the growth. Although the results of this kind of trial are yet to yet already been published, previous trials suggest that the treatment may increase the immune system?s chance to combat the particular tumor.

CSU is among 20 participants inside the Comparative Oncology Studies Consortium (COTC), a developing program started in 2003 in addition to managed by the National Cancers Institute to study cancer inside dogs and to recruit them for scientific trials connected with new remedies. The goal increases results, more personal treatments regarding man as well as his companion. ?Several tumor types inside dogs copy human cancers of their biologic habits and ancestral signature, ? states that Susan Lana, associate mentor of specialized medical oncology on CSU. ?Dogs might help us try to answer queries like, ?Why may this most cancers spread? ? and also ?Are generally there genetic pathways we could explore with regard to treatment? ? inches

Dogs usually are ideal designs, Lana says, because they are genetically much like humans and also share the same environment. They build cancer by natural means, unlike mice and subjects, which must be engineered to offer the disease. And dogs are major enough to endure MRIs as well as blood exams vigrx plus, and biopsies, so people can greater observe changes inside the cancer after some time. Thanks for you to advances with genomics in addition to gene sequencing, researchers have established which dog cancers are usually most just like their man counterparts. Besides osteosarcoma, they contain prostate and also breast cancer, melanoma, soft structure sarcoma, and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma.

For Our Babies | INSANITY OF MOTHERHOOD motherhood midlife ...

English: A sleeping male baby with his arm ext...

About a year ago, I started the process of becoming an Infant/Toddler Trainer.? The program offered by PITC, Program for Infant/Toddler Care, is designed to educate infant/toddler caregivers ways of helping infants learn the lessons that every infant comes into the world eager to learn.? The mission statement below is from the PITC website.

The Program for Infant /Toddler Care?seeks to ensure that America?s infants get a safe, healthy, emotionally secure and intellectually rich start in life. Its three-pronged mission is to

    1) increase the availability and quality of child care for all children under age three;

    2) disseminate information that increases the practice of responsive, respectful and relationship based infant toddler care; and

    3) influence national, regional and local policies and practices so that the needs and interests of individual infants, toddlers, and their families are the foundation for all curriculum development and program activity.

I am on the mailing list for all PITC events.? J. Ronald Lally, director of the work for PITC, recently sent an informational email about a campaign he is initiating.? Mr. Lally is a national expert of early childhood development and the founding member of? Zero to Three?- National Center of Infants, Toddlers and Families. He is also the Co-Director for Center for Child Family Studies, West ED. The campaign he created? is?called, For Our?Babies.? It is an exciting initiative to improve the lives on children ages birth ? age three.? Mr. Lally is calling for all of us to become involved in his mission.? Below is taken from the For Our Babies website, clearly stating what the movement is.

For Our Babies?is a national movement promoting healthy development in U.S. children from conception to age 3. We advocate for the types of environments, experiences, and relationships that infants and toddlers need in order to thrive.

To capitalize on the opportunity that rapid human brain development provides, and to realize the benefits that healthy children provide to all of us, For Our Babies advocates for the following

    Supported Pregnancies

Prenatal health care coverage for all families, regardless of income, including home-based support and counseling during pregnancy.

WHY IT MATTERS Prenatal healthcare reduces future healthcare costs and identifies problems when they are more easily addressed.
AS IT STANDS In the US, 38 percent of children under the age of 3 have access to health insurance.

Affordable intervention services for at-risk pregnancies.

WHY IT MATTERS For every dollar spent employers can expect a savings of $3.33 for postnatal care and $4.63 in long-term morbidity costs.
AS IT STANDS The US ranks 23rd in infant mortality rates, largely due to inadequate and limited access to affordable prenatal intervention services.

Paid Leave & Well Baby Care

Paid leave for parents for the first nine months of their child?s life.

Why It Matters Early strong attachments to parents help with healthy brain development during first three years of a child?s life. Employee turnover is also estimated to cost between 70 and 150% of the employee?s wages- paid family leave can therefore save firms considerable amounts of money.
As It Stands New parents in the US may access leave through the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993. FMLA leave consists of 12 weeks of unpaid leave that can taken continuously or intermittently and on a full-time basis or reduced schedule leave, depending on employer?s approval.

Affordable developmental screenings to identify physical and behavioral needs, with referral to affordable help when needed.

Why It Matters Early identification of special needs means the possibility of early intervention. Because of significant brain development that occurs in the first three years of life, the earlier the intervention the better with significant cost savings.
As It Stands In the US, nine million children are without healthcare coverage and many more are under-insured. Only 38 percent of US children under the age of 3 have access to health insurance.

    Screening & Follow-Up Services

Affordable visits to the homes of all newborns for the first two years that include guidance by professionals trained in parenting and healthy development, along with counseling on early emotional, social, intellectual, linguistic, and perceptual/motor development.

Why It Matters Quality voluntary home visiting programs help ensure?that more children stay out of social welfare, mental health and juvenile justice systems saving money. Lactation consultation can help with breast-feeding success which improves short- and long-term health of women and their infants, and lowers total healthcare costs.
As It Stands Homevisiting programs in the US are not consistent or well-coordinated. Of the 119 programs identified in the US by a Pew Foundation study, 34 states had more than one program administered across their health and education and human service agencies and four states did not administer any home visiting programs at all.

Affordable services for children with identified special needs.

Why It Matters Early intervention services have a moderate and positive effect on the developmental progress of many disabled children, especially those younger than 3 years of age.
As It Stands Many families struggle to find affordable, high-quality, consistent, developmentally appropriate child care for their children that addresses their child?s unique and special needs. Even when services are available, families may not be equipped to navigate them or effectively advocate for their children.

Free intervention services for families in crisis.

Why It Matters When families are in crisis they can not wait for services. Brain research confirms constant stress alters the formation of neural pathways, so that coping and thinking mechanisms don?t develop as they should. This has grave impact on a child?s ability to cope later in life.
As It Stands Within the broad framework of free intervention services, there is wide variation across the nation in the kind of interventions, duration of services, size of caseloads, and components of service that characterize these programs.

    Quality Infant/Toddler Care

Child care regulations that ensure that care is provided in safe, engaging, and intimate settings.

Why It Matters Infants and toddlers are not able to defend their right to safe and engaging child care. Therefore adults must protect them from potentially dangerous and harmful experiences. All of society benefits when regulations are in place to ensure?that care is provide in safe, engaging and intimate settings.
As It Stands In the US, research shows that approximately?7 million infants and toddlers are in childcare, 8% of the care is considered good quality, 40% poor quality, and 12% is considered damaging to children?s development and educational success. 30-40% of children enter kindergarten unprepared to benefit from the educational program.

Training, compensation, and professional stature for infant and toddler teachers at the same level as K-12 teachers.

Why It Matters Instability erodes the quality of?care experienced by children. Relationships with caregivers that can grow and strengthen over time are essential to healthy social and cognitive development. The only way to attract and retain a well-qualified professional workforce is to pay and train people accordingly.
As It Stands In the US, the annual turnover rate for infant toddler caregivers is an alarming 30% annually and 75% every four years. In the US, infant care teachers are among the poorest paid earning approximately $9/hr, less than the average dog walker.

    Childcare subsidies for all families.

Why It Matters Investing in early childhood education provides the answer to global competitiveness, better health and education outcomes and less crime and poverty.
As It Stands Parents in the US pay 80% of child care costs whereas?Europeans pay 30%. According to national report (NACCRA 2008), the average price of full-time center-based care for an infant was $14,591 a year.
Caring for?infants and?toddlers, has?always been a passion of mine.? I am very excited to promote? For Our Babies, on my blog.? If you share?my passion or ?have an interest in making a difference in the lives of?infants and toddlers, I?urge you to sign Mr. Lally?s, For Our Babies pledge.

The goal is to get?one million signatures by the end of 2012.? I am confident it can be done.? With your signature, the goal will be a step closer.

Thank you for your support.? Talk to you soon, friends.

Elisabeth Moss Slams Ex-Husband, Sexes Up Page Six Magazine

Elisabeth Moss is not known for being outspoken or particularly sexy.

But the Mad Men star sets out to change both those perceptions in the latest issue of Page Six Magazine. First, the sexiness:

Elisabeth Moss for Page Six Magazine

Asked about her divorce from Saturday Night Live player Fred Armisten, meanwhile, Moss at first told the publication "it's so hard to talk about," but then added:

"One of the greatest things I heard someone say about [Fred] is, 'He's so great at doing impersonations. But the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person.' To me, that sums it up."

Laughing about how she'll likely receive a "slap on the wrist" for the comment, Moss said she's been a "good girl" for so long and, hey, "sometimes you just want to be a bad girl for a minute."

Does she still talk with her ex?

    "Oh god, no," Moss said.

Does she want to settle down again? Sure. Probably. Someday. For now...

"I obviously want a partner in life, and I want someone to grow old with, but there's also a nice time when you're young to enjoy being you. It's fun to go out at night and not know what's going to happen. I'm addicted to and obsessed with my freedom in that sense. I'm having fun!"

L-Carnitine: Myth Or Magic, Part II

In January of 2012, I decided to supplement my normal diet with L-Carnitine while training for a marathon.? This decision resulted from reading various research papers on the potential benefits of L-Carnitine.? Many articles about running supplements promote L-Carnitine's ability to help our bodies produce energy by metabolizing fat and carbohydrates during exercise.? But I learned that carnitine is important for everyone, not just athletes. ?

    Dietary Sources of L-Carnitine

Six weeks into 2012, here's some pointers that I discovered from personal experience and from my research while training for a marathon: ?

    1. Carnitine is now widely available as a supplement in several forms (L-Carnitine,
Acetyl-L-Carnitine, and Propionyl-L-Carnitine), but the most popular seems to be L-Carnitine. ?Research studies prefer to use Acetyl-L-Carnitine because it is better absorbed in the small intestine than L-Carnitine.
    2. The most common source of dietary carnitine is red meat.? Carnitine is naturally present in red meat, because it is stored in the muscle tissue of mammals. ?When we eat red meat, the carnitine is absorbed in our small intestine and from there enters our bloodstream.
    3. Carnitine is present in these types of meat (from the US National Institutes of Health): 4 oz steak = approx 160 mg of carnitine; 4 oz ground beef = about 100 mg; 4 oz cod fillet = approx 4-7 mg; pork, bacon, lamb and chicken also contain carnitine, but in
      smaller amounts.
    4. Carnitine is also present in foods of plant origins, but at much lower levels.? Dairy
products, as well as some fish, nuts and legumes, can be good sources of carnitine
in the average person's diet.? One cup of whole milk, for instance, contains 5 mg.
    5. Any excess amounts of carnitine will be excreted in our urine.

    Energy drinks

Changing my normal diet to contain more red meat, chicken, and cod would be an easy way to boost my dietary consumption of carnitine.

But I also considered using energy drinks as a supplement. ?I wondered why L-Carnitine is added to many sports drinks, and discovered it allows advertisers to promote energy drinks as "providing muscular energy" and "assisting fat metabolism".? Both those claims would naturally attract athletes.?

But I soon realized that taking a concentrated oral supplement of L-Carnitine would be more
efficient than drinking sports drinks, because one can of energy drink might contain on average only about 50 mg of L-Carnitine.? The scientific studies which I've read used daily dosages as high as 2000 mg in their testing of human subjects.?

    Oral L-Carnitine Supplements

If I didn't want to get my L-Carnitine from sports drinks, what would be my best alternative??

    1. I could purchase carnitine in caplet form at any health food/vitamin store.? For the
purposes of my personal study, I selected one at random that contains 120 caplets per bottle, with each caplet containing 500 mg, for $11.99.?
    2. I could also purchase bottles of liquid supplement. ?I bought one bottle of triple strength
L-Carnitine for approximately $30.00, with 30 daily doses of 1500 mg of L-Carnitine, and was satisfied with the price.? An average can of energy drink costs between $2.00-$3.00.? I would have to buy 900 cans of energy drink, spending over $2000.00, to equal one bottle of liquid L-Carnitine!?
    3. Taking 1500 mg of L-Carnitine in caplet form on a daily basis would be even cheaper, but not as much fun.? I love the taste of the liquid, which comes in flavors that
make me think of Jolly Rancher candy flavors, like Watermelon, Lemon and Grape!? I take the recommended dosage of 1 tablespoon per day (1500 mg), immediately priot to a run or other moderate to intensive exercise.?
    4. One tablespoon containing 1500 mg of L-Carnitine contains 4 g of carbohydrates and 15 calories.? Be sure to shake the bottle well before use!? I didn't see this warning on the bottle originally. ?Also, be sure to take it on an empty stomach.?
    5. Because a friend of mine?is sensitive to gluten, I investigated the L-Carnitine I'd
purchased.? The caplets and liquid supplements contain NO gluten.?

Six weeks into my grand experiment, am I feeling any different?? After consuming a regular dose of L-Carnitine, was my muscle fatigue lower?? I do feel as if I have a little more energy, particular in the evening when I am running after work and before dinner.? My weight has remained constant.?

Perhaps most importantly after six weeks, I have realized that I will have to continue my
experiment for quite a while longer than I expected.? The study that most impressed me describes testing L-carnitine supplementation in athletes after 24 weeks of taking 2000 mg of L-Carnitine on a daily basis.? In a later article, I will discuss the results of that British study, which were released last year, and also record more of my own anecdoctal observations during the next 4 ? months.
